this is awesome.... coincidentally I'll be doing the same thing this summer. My wife and I are returnng to Almaty (her home country) and her parents want to take us to Urumqi by way of bus. Thanks for he post- now I know what to expect.
Your blog keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!
Hi, it's my first time reading your blog, and I like it very much.
However, I am a Swedish student which is currently doing a exchange semester in Almaty. I really would like to go to Urumqi during my midterm break. Can you tell me the name of the bus company/tourist agency? Where in Almaty are they located, telephone number, email? Do you know if they help issuing visa?
@ Peter
- Buses to Urumqi leave from the large bus station where all long distance buses leave from (ask around or check Lonely Planet map)
- The key challenge is getting a visa for China. At the time when we were traveling you could only get it from your home country but not there. This might be more relaxed now - we were during the olympics. Best is if you can get it from home.
